1. Parasite pressure rises on shared spaces when routine falls
- Sweden has deliberately moved from routine to selective/risk-based deworming (Medical Products Agency, SVA, ESCCAP). Healthy adult dogs and cats should not be dewormed “just in case”. Fecal testing + treat when positive or high risk (puppies, outdoor cats, kennels, travel, hunting). Reason: resistance — same logic as antibiotics.
- Shared runs and dog parks are high-risk environments. International studies (e.g. US DOGPARCS) show 20–30% of dogs in dog parks may carry one or more intestinal parasites (Giardia commonest, then hookworm, whipworm, Toxocara). Eggs and cysts survive long in soil and grass.
- Fenbendazole (Axilur etc.) remains one of the most used agents against roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and often Giardia. Swedish data show good efficacy against Toxocara canis. Resistance exists in some populations/species — but the drug has not “stopped working” generally in Sweden.
When routine falls at the same time as more animals share the same surfaces: higher environmental contamination → more subclinical and clinical infections → more diarrhea, weight loss, poor coat, repeated treatments and, in worst cases, shorter lives in sensitive individuals. That is epidemiology — not speculation.
2. Direct link to human burnout: caregiver burden
When the pet becomes sicker, burden on the owner rises. Research (Mary Beth Spitznagel et al.) consistently shows:
- Owners of chronically/seriously ill pets have markedly higher caregiver burden (e.g. ~44% high burden vs ~8% for healthy pets).
- More stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, worse quality of life, social isolation, guilt (“am I doing enough?”).
- Same mechanisms as caregivers of sick humans: time, worry, money, sleep loss, lack of recovery.
In practice: more vet visits, more medication, more cleaning after diarrhea, more work stress, more family conflict. Healthy pets can protect against stress; sick pets can turn protection into load.
3. Resistance — yes, but precisely

4. What actually works
Diagnostics before blind courses
Fecal tests (preferably repeated) instead of “deworm everyone always”.
Hygiene on shared spaces
Always pick up. Cleaning runs lowers pressure more than frequent blind medication.
Risk-based + owner support
More frequent for park/daycare/hunting/travel. Ask about caregiver burden — not only the animal’s symptoms.
5. Summary
The chain holds: less routine + shared spaces → parasite pressure → sick animals → caregiver burden → risk of owner exhaustion. Fenbendazole and similar agents remain central — especially when animals are GI-sick or have proven parasites — but best as targeted treatment in a risk-based process, not eternal casual dosing without diagnostics.
